Winter chill hits Doon as maximum temperature drops 9°C below normal

The weather took a turn in Dehradun and other parts of the State on Saturday with the maximum temperature dropping nine degrees Celsius below normal in the provisional State capital. Citizens awoke to a foggy morning in Dehradun with cloudy skies being witnessed throughout the day, exacerbating the cold condition. Similar weather is expected on Sunday with the State Meteorological Centre issuing a yellow warning (Watch) regarding the possibility of dense fog likely to occur at a few places in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar districts and plains of Nainital, Champawat, Pauri and Dehradun districts. Cold day conditions are likely to occur at isolated places in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar districts and plains of Nainital, Champawat, Pauri and Dehradun districts today.

Apart from this, very light to light rain/snowfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh districts on Sunday. Snowfall is likely to occur at places situated at altitudes of 3,500 metres and above. Dry weather is likely to prevail in the remaining districts of the State today.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various parts of the State on Saturday were 12.3 degrees Celsius and 7.3 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 14.5 degrees Celsius and 11.5 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 20.1 degrees Celsius and 6.5 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 18.6 degrees Celsius and 6.6 degrees Celsius in New Tehri. The maximum temperature dropped nine degrees Celsius below normal while in Pantnagar it dropped eight degrees Celsius below normal.

Dehradun is forecast to witness a mainly clear to partly cloudy sky. Shallow to moderate fog and cold day conditions are likely to occur in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 16 degrees Celsius and nine degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.
