Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital reported four electric shock cases in July.  Informing this, the medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Manu Jain said that such cases surge up in the emergency department in monsoon. This year, the hospital recorded four incidents in July so far, including two minor and two major cases. “Unfortunately, one of the patients did not survive,” Dr Jain added.

In light of these incidents, he emphasised the importance of taking precautions to prevent electric shocks during the monsoon season.  “To be on the safer side, the people should have the household wiring checked before the monsoon arrives and have the damages if found to be promptly repaired. Besides, I advise them to see to it that there is no stagnant water around their homes,” he said. He further said: “As far as the hospital is concerned, I am always alert that no live wires are left on the floor during this period.”

Dr Jain further said that if someone suffers an electric shock, those around them should act responsibly. “Careful of their own safety, they should first wear gloves or put plastic wraps on their hands and then proceed to free the shock-affected person from the wire.   It is also vital to move the affected person to a safe location, check his or her pulse and oxygen levels and, if needed, apply the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately,” he added.

He stressed that everyone should learn CPR, suggesting they should visit the district hospital to learn it.

Dr Jain added that individuals can contact the 108 ambulance service where the pharmacists can provide immediate treatment for patients who have suffered electric shocks.
