Lack of awareness fuelling ragging among college students

Sunday, 08 October 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

In spite of the implementation of strict regulations against ragging, students in the city continue to be subjected to such actions during their time in college. The recent incidents of ragging carried out by students at a college in Dehradun have once again elicited focus on this trend. Experts have emphasised that one of the main reasons behind such actions of college students is the lack of awareness among the students regarding ragging. In order to prevent occurrence of ragging in city colleges, it is imperative that every college establish an anti-ragging cell, the experts said.

Dwelling on the issue, the chairperson of the anti-ragging cell at UPES Rajeshwari Sharma said, “Ragging is an intolerable activity which should be prohibited in all colleges. The University Grants Commission has issued strict directives for colleges to prevent such activities on their campus. Ragging not only causes physical harm to the students but also affects them mentally. Additionally, it leads to distractions from their studies. Therefore, to put an end to such actions in colleges, it is crucial that every college has an anti-ragging cell. Apart from this, they must conduct an awareness programme about the ill effects of ragging for college-level students.”

She further said, “Our university has an anti-ragging cell which ensures the prevention of such cases. In addition, we also organise awareness programmes for the students regarding the ill effects of ragging,” she added.

Coordinator of DAV (PG) College anti-ragging cell HS Randhawa told this correspondent, “Ragging cannot be tolerated and should be strictly prohibited among college students. The effects of ragging on freshers can be emotionally damaging and can even lead to students skipping classes. Every college has the responsibility to ensure that such activities do not occur on its premises. In order to prevent such cases, DAV has established a dedicated anti-ragging cell that diligently works towards eradicating such activities. Additionally, we have made it compulsory for college students to fill out an anti-ragging form every year.”

He further said that to stop these activities in other colleges, there is the need for raising awareness about ragging among their students through means like banners and workshops.
