Doctors in the city emphasised that people should take essential precautions during the monsoon season to prevent fungal infections. With the onset of the monsoon season, there has been a surge in cases of fungal and bacterial infections among the people. Maintaining proper hygiene by ensuring that the body remains dry and clean is crucial in preventing fungal infections. Self-medicating should be avoided as it can exacerbate skin allergies, the dermatologists warned.
The head of the dermatology department at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital, Dr Shruti Barnwal said that the onset of the monsoon season has led to a spike in skin allergies among people. “I have observed ailments, including fungal infections, acne problems and chlorine allergies caused by water in swimming pools, becoming more prevalent now. Some patients have exacerbated their allergies by opting for medication with the help of local chemists rather than consulting doctors. This is a bad trend which should be avoided. During the monsoon, fungal and bacterial infections are common enough due to factors such as sweating, prolonged moisture and dampness leading to symptoms like reddish spots and itching. I advise people to take preventive measures like wearing loose, light-coloured clothing, drying the body with a towel upon returning home from the rain, taking a bath and cleansing the body with medicated soap to ward off fungal infections,” she said.
Further, a skin specialist based in Dehradun Dr Anil Arya said that during the monsoon season, increased moisture in the surroundings can lead to various skin allergies, particularly fungal infections and small boils. “I am now noting a rise in cases of fungal infection, especially among children, as the rainy season has commenced. Those with diabetes are more susceptible to fungal infections due to their weakened immunity. So, the diabetic patients must take extra precautions such as avoiding getting drenched in the rain, refraining from wearing tight and wet clothes and seeking medical advice from a doctor at the earliest instead of indulging in self-medication involving the local chemists,” he added.
