HelpAge India organised a seminar on the challenges and solutions for elderly individuals at Doon Library and Research Centre on Tuesday to mark the International Day of Older Persons. During the event, meaningful and positive steps were discussed for the elderly who feel isolated from society and family. A panel discussion was held on the subject of policy and law in dealing with the challenges of the elderly.
Speaking on the occasion, founder and senior advocate of Samadhaan NGO, Renu D Singh emphasised the importance of providing mental support to the elderly, as they often become mentally weak in old age. She also highlighted issues such as mobility problems, property usurpation and sexual exploitation faced by elderly individuals, emphasising the need for a system to provide immediate help under the national policy for old persons. Further, senior journalist Ramesh Kudiyal suggested the establishment of community halls and entertainment options for the elderly to help combat loneliness and provide them with opportunities to interact with others of the same age. Apart from this, the State head of HelpAge India, Chaitanya Upadhyay discussed the organisation’s 46 years of work in promoting the health and development of the elderly. He stressed the need for collective efforts to improve the social, economic and practical lives of the elderly. He emphasised the urgency of addressing the various challenges faced by the elderly in society and the need to accelerate efforts to support them.
