The BJP has claimed that chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is a flagbearer of culture while the Congress is bothered more about appeasement than the State. Reacting to Congress leader Harish Rawat’s statement, BJP State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said that live-in relationships are not part of our culture but considering present conditions and various court decisions, a provision for it was felt necessary in the Uniform Civil Code.
“Women’s safety is our priority and registering such relationships will prevent anyone from concealing identity and the guardians of the individuals will also be aware. There have been incidents in recent years in which a person concealed real identity and duped the partner. Registration of live-in relationships will deter the criminally minded from duping women and this provision in the UCC will especially ensure the safety of women,” Chauhan said.
Before raising questions at the UCC, the Congress should clarify its intention. It should state whether it is concerned about the State or a particular community, he added.
