UKD demands U’khand’s inclusion in Constitution’s Fifth schedule

Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) has vowed to make all efforts to include the State in the Fifth schedule of the Constitution. Stating this at a media conference, the president of party’s youth wing Ashish Negi said that following the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the State, the matters concerning domicile and land laws have gained more traction than before.

“We all know that the UCC has made provision for outsiders to become permanent residents on completing one year’s stay here. This move has left the natives of the State worried and insecure, making them wonder whether their rights on the land will be dangerously compromised in coming years. With ours being a mountainous State, we certainly need protection under the constitutional provisions.   We are of the firm view that bringing the State under the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution is the only viable solution to safeguard the interests of the natives. This will not just ensure that our lands are safe but will provide us with reserved opportunities in government jobs with the natives being given Scheduled Tribe status en masse,” he said, adding that his party and particularly its youth wing launch a full-blown movement on this issue, involving all sections of the native population.

He further said that their special focus would be on the unemployed local youth of the State. “We will fight for them so that they are provided with ample employment opportunities in both public and private sectors.  The native youths must be prioritised in areas such as contracts, transportation, tourism and horticulture,” he demanded.
