Social media ‘free trial’ scam drains users bank accounts

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

A new online scam has surfaced which is targeting people through social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram by showing short and interesting clips of Chinese or Korean dramas. These clips are designed to create curiosity and encourage viewers to watch the full story. A link is usually provided below the video, which takes users to unknown apps such as KukuFM, DramaBox or similar platforms.

Once the app is downloaded, users are asked to start a ‘free trial’ to watch the full content. During this process, they are prompted to enter their UPI PIN or card details. “Many people think that no money is being charged at that moment, but in reality, they unknowingly activate an auto-payment system.  The scammers mainly aim to collect payment details through this trick. After the trial period ends, money ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5000 is automatically deducted from the user’s bank account,” a police officer said.

Cyber experts have warned that simply uninstalling the app does not stop these payments. Users must manually cancel the subscription or auto-debit service to prevent further deductions.

The senior superintendent of police (STF) Ajai Singh advised people to stay alert while clicking on unknown links and avoid sharing payment details for free trials. He also suggested that users should regularly check their bank’s auto-debit or standing instructions. In case of any fraud, people should immediately report it on the cyber helpline number 1930 or through the official website cybercrime.gov.in to take timely action.
