Dehradun police arrested a 65-year-old man for allegedly cheating a buyer of Rs 1.65 crore through a property fraud on Saturday. The accused was identified as Sanjay Jain who had allegedly sold the property using forged documents, police said.

According to official sources, Dehradun resident Vinod Prakash Aggrawal had filed a complaint at Kotwali Nagar police station on May 24. He had alleged that Jain and his associates sold him a property on the fifth floor of Arihant Tower on Haridwar Road using fake documents and took Rs 1.65 crore from him in return.

During the investigation, police found that the same property had already been sold to another person, Nishant Garg in 2024. Despite the earlier sale, the accused allegedly prepared forged documents and sold the property again in 2025 to Aggrawal.

During questioning, Jain reportedly admitted that his luggage bag manufacturing business in Haridwar had suffered heavy losses, leaving him in debt, police said. To clear the debt, his wife had sold the property in 2024. However, as the financial problems continued, the accused allegedly used fake documents to sell the same property again.

Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobal said that the names of other people involved in the fraud have also come to light during the investigation. Efforts are being made to arrest the remaining accused in the matter soon, he added.
