Children Traffic Park project marred by construction delays

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

The persistent delay in completion of the construction work of the much hyped Children Traffic Park in Dehradun has put up a question mark over the functioning of the Transport department of the State.

The park, designed to teach school students about road safety and traffic rules in an engaging way is being constructed inside the City Forest Park developed by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) near the Sahastradhara helipad.

The Transport department is developing the park and its construction began in 2024. However, for many months it was reported that construction work was in the last stage and would be completed soon, but till now no development over this has been seen.

According to sources, the construction of the park has been given to a construction agency. This agency was asked to complete the construction work of the park by September 2025, but due to some or the other reasons it could not be completed within the designated timeline. After this, the agency was asked to complete the construction of the park by March , 2026. But till now construction work of the said park has not yet finished.

Queried about this delay, the regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety), Dehradun Division, Anita Chamola said that recently a review meeting was conducted with the construction agency at the headquarter level in which the additional transport commissioner was present. During that, directions were issued to the construction agency to complete the Children Traffic Park construction work by June 31. If the construction work of the said park is not completed by June 31, then further action will be proceeded, she said.

It is important to mention that the Children’s Traffic Park will cover an area of 1.5 acres within the MDDA Park premises and will feature routes designed specifically for children. This setup will allow them to gain practical experience in road safety and traffic behaviour. The park will also feature an auditorium with 7D films focused on road safety for students and children.
