The Food Safety department in Dehradun started a drive to check adulteration in jaggery available in the marketplaces from Tuesday. The district food safety officer PC Joshi informed that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has selected 250 cities across the country to run a surveillance sampling campaign to check the quality and safety parameters of jaggery available in the market for consumers. Since Dehradun is also among the selected cities, this campaign was started here on Tuesday, stated Joshi. He said that the teams of the department inspected various shops across the city and collected a total of 10 samples on the first day. He said that since the consumption of jaggery increases during winter in the city, the department took samples of packed jaggery as well as those being sold loose by shopkeepers and vendors. He said that the department has already sent these samples to an FSSAI authorised lab in Gurugram on the same day. He said that the food safety teams will continue taking samples of jaggery from across the city under the campaign of FSSAI.
