The Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) will spend Rs 4.84 crore to build modern badminton and volleyball courts in eight government schools located under its jurisdictional areas to promote sports at the school level. The aim of this project is to encourage sports activities among students and help in their physical and mental development, MDDA officers said.
As per the MDDA officials, both indoor and outdoor badminton courts, along with volleyball courts, will be constructed in selected schools. These include government schools in Miyawala, Ranipokhari, Doiwala, Selakui, Herbertpur, Saudasaroli, Rajpur Road and Kaulagarh. Some schools will get indoor courts while others will have outdoor courts.
MDDA officials said that sports facilities are very important for students as they help build discipline, teamwork, confidence and leadership skills. They believe that good sports infrastructure at the school level would help identify and nurture young talent from an early age. These facilities will also be available for local residents, encouraging a healthy lifestyle for all.
Speaking on the initiative, the MDDA vice- chairman, Banshidhar Tiwari said that along with urban development, social development is also a priority for the authority. “Investing in school sports facilities is an investment in the future of children,” he noted. The secretary, MDDA, Mohan Singh Bernia said that all construction work would be done as per technical standards with special focus on quality, safety and timely completion.
