Altrus Healthcare performs life-saving surgery on newborn with rare condition

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

Altrus Healthcare successfully operated on a newborn girl born at just 32 weeks—almost two months before her expected due date. Weighing less than two kilogrammes, this patient was brought to Altrus in a critical condition, unable to pass urine and born without the natural birth passage (vaginal passage) — an extremely rare diagnosis known as bladder outlet obstruction due to hydrometrocolpos with imperforate vagina and urethrovaginal fistula.

This complex and unusual condition posed an immediate threat of renal failure, putting the newborn’s life in grave danger. Moreover, the absence of a birth passage opening raised significant concerns about her future reproductive capabilities.

Under the expert surgical hands of Dr Mahendra Dandge, supported by anesthesiologist Dr Rahul Varshney and under the care of pediatrician Dr Virender Verma, the intricate procedure successfully relieved the urinary obstruction. Additionally, the surgical team meticulously created a pathway, ensuring the newborn’s future reproductive health remains intact.

“Cases like these are incredibly rare and challenging. Our team’s prompt diagnosis and decisive surgical intervention not only saved this child’s life but also secured her a healthy and normal future,” said Varshney, the medical superintendent of Altrus Healthcare.

This surgery highlights Altrus Healthcare’s dedication to providing world-class medical services right here in our community, setting a new benchmark in neonatal care and complex paediatric surgeries.
