In an innovative initiative to popularise the folk languages of Uttarakhand, Colonel D P Dimri and his team members have developed the app-based instant pocket dictionary, Aakhar. At a function held at Shri Darbar Sahib, the head of the shrine, Mahant Devendra Das inaugurated the app on Saturday while describing it as a visionary step towards the preservation and promotion of mother tongues. This digital dictionary, encompassing Hindi, English, Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari, will facilitate the understanding and adoption of commonly used words, phrases and idioms in everyday communication, he further informed.

Notably, Colonel Dimri is an alumnus of Shri Guru Ram Rai P G College.  He also worked as an advisor on skills and entrepreneurship to the Government of India. “Aakhar will connect Uttarakhandis living across the world, members of the Indian diaspora and the younger generation with their cultural roots, while encouraging the use of local languages in families, social gatherings, and cultural events,” he added.

He further said that the app would remain open to suggestions and is expected to be available on the Google platform shortly.
