BJP says Congress undermining disaster response while felicitating sleeping MLAs

The Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that instead of supporting relief and rescue efforts in Uttarakhand, Congress is disturbing the environment in disaster-hit areas and adding to the pain of victims by honouring MLAs who slept in the Vidhan Sabha in Gairsain.

The State president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt said that Congress is spreading falsehoods to cover its conduct in the Assembly. He claimed that the opposition is attempting to divert attention from its actions by creating confusion and making insensitive statements. Bhatt said that the State is facing the impact of natural disasters and the government, with public support, is engaged in providing relief.

He stated that chief minister Pushkar Dhami is visiting affected areas to meet victims and monitor rescue operations being carried out at a large scale. He added that the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is extending support and monitoring the situation, while voluntary organisations, RSS, media and the public are also contributing to relief efforts.

According to Bhatt, Congress has remained absent from relief operations despite being the main opposition party. He alleged that the party is demoralising rescue teams and provoking people in disaster-affected areas like Syana Chatti and Tharali and obstructing relief work. He said that the Assembly session in Gairsain was convened to discuss the problems of victims and disaster management but Congress MLAs chose to engage in disorderly behaviour instead.

Bhatt accused Congress leaders of breaking constitutional traditions in their push to withdraw personal cases and said their conduct in the Assembly has drawn criticism across the State. Bhatt added that Congress is now attempting to wash away its actions through false claims. He further criticised the decision to honour MLAs who slept inside Vidhan Sabha to allegedly stage a protest, saying it was aimed at gaining media attention but ended up hurting disaster victims.
