PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

A fire broke out late on Wednesday night at the garbage transfer station near Kargi Chowk, disrupting waste collection in various parts of the city and causing thick smoke to spread in nearby residential areas.

Uttarakhand Fire Service department teams reached the site soon after receiving information and continued efforts through the night to control the blaze. The fire spread deep inside the accumulated garbage, making it difficult to fully extinguish. Even hours after the incident, waste heaps were reportedly smouldering and smoke lingered over the area, causing inconvenience and breathing discomfort for residents living nearby.

Deputy municipal commissioner Tanvir Marwah said that the fire was triggered due to a technical issue at the transfer station. He added that a notice has been issued to Dehradun Smart City Limited regarding the incident and lapses in maintenance at the site. Marwah further said that the structure at the transfer station had not been removed earlier, as repair work was not carried out properly. He stated that the site has now been cleared and immediate steps were taken to control the situation and prevent further spread of fire.

The impact of the incident was felt in many parts of the city. Waste collection operations were disrupted in several areas. Garbage was not lifted from multiple localities, leading to waste accumulation in some areas. Residents expressed concern over the situation, saying that unattended garbage heaps could lead to foul smell, unhygienic surroundings and possible health risks if clearance operations are delayed further.
