The Rishikesh police arrested an accused linked to the “King of Uttarakhand” gang from Sonauli in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. The Rishikesh police said the accused, who was wanted under the Gangsters Act, was trying to escape to Nepal to avoid arrest. The accused was identified as Ravi Kumar Gupta (38) a resident of Rishikesh, had a reward of Rs 25,000 for anyone providing information leading to his arrest. The police said that gang leader Jagjit Singh alias Jagga and three of his associates had earlier been arrested and sent to jail. Gupta was also named in the same case.
Gupta had been absconding since a case was registered against him under the Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. The case involves alleged organised criminal activities including illegal extortion, blackmailing, threats and interference in land and family disputes.
According to the police, a tip-off revealed that Gupta was planning to cross into Nepal through Sonauli with help from his associates. A team from Rishikesh police coordinated with the local police and arrested him from Sonauli.
The police also seized a XUV, along with Nepal Customs documents and papers related to the vehicle’s stay and movement in Nepal. Four criminal cases are registered against Gupta, police said.
