In the scorching summer heat, tigers and leopards, now undergoing treatment at the Corbett Tiger Reserve, are being given a special ‘ice cream treat’ to help them beat the heat.

Sharing details, the CTR director, Saket Badola said that a total of 16 tigers and 18 leopards are currently under treatment at Dhela Rescue Centre. “These animals were either found sick in the forests or rescued during incidents of human-wildlife conflict,” he added.

Considering the searing heat troubling the animals,  special care is being taken to ensure their well-being. The wildlife veterinarian, Dr Dushyant Sharma explained that a mixture of meat, recovery supplements, electrolytes, multivitamins, medicines and water is prepared and frozen in containers to form an ice cream-like treat. This frozen diet not only provides relief from the heat but also helps prevent dehydration. The added electrolytes and supplements aid in faster recovery and improved health of the animals,” he added.

The people here are talking about this unique initiative by the forest department. “This is an innovative initiative, highlighting care for wildlife suffering due to the extreme weather conditions,” said a wildlife activist.
