Police further said that about Rs 24 lakh has been collected as fine during the drive so far. The verification drive is part of a statewide verification directed by director general of police Deepam Seth following a string of murders in Dehradun, including that of gangster Vikram Sharma. Insecure citizens raised concerns about whether proper verification had been carried out earlier.
Speaking about the operation, the inspector general (IG) Garhwal, Rajeev Swaroop said that the police are conducting the drive on a large scale to identify criminals and suspicious persons. The IG also said that senior superintendents of police (SSPs) and superintendents of police (SPs) of all districts have been directed to closely monitor the drive. The range office is also monitoring the progress and officers have been asked to submit daily reports. He added that if any person with a criminal background is found during verification, strict action will be taken to ensure they do not stay in the state.
Operation Crackdown started on February 15 and will continue till March 1. The main objective is to verify identities of tenants and people from other States living in the district.
