The Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal has directed the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) to ensure 100 per cent tagging of cattle in all registered cow shelters. He expressed displeasure over the incomplete tagging work of cattle on Thursday during a meeting of the district-level monitoring committee formed for the operation of cow shelters. He instructed that a detailed report on the tagging status be submitted soon. The committee discussed the management, maintenance and establishment of new shelters for stray and destitute cattle.

The DM informed that the district administration has approved a new Gaushala with a capacity of 150 cattle in Kheruwa, Kalsi, with an allocated budget of Rs 49.98 lakh. He instructed that the proposal must be sent to the district planning committee at the earliest. The district administration has already approved proposals for setting up shelters of Rs 22 lakh for Chharba in Vikasnagar and Rs 27.03 lakh for Mauza Arcadia Grant in Premnagar respectively. The DM has directed the chief veterinary officer to ensure a headcount of cattle in all shelters twice a week through local veterinary staff.

The Animal Welfare Board will also conduct random inspections of shelters. He also instructed to focus on regular health check-ups, timely treatment and vaccination of sick or injured cattle. He also directed that cattle must be provided with balanced nutrition, clean drinking water and proper shelter conditions.

The officials concerned informed the DM that 10 cow shelters are currently registered in Dehradun district. These include four in Sahaspur, two each in Vikasnagar and Doiwala and one each in Chakrata and Dharampur. They also presented expenditure details from the previous financial year and updates on new proposals and tagging work. They also informed the committee that an app has been developed for cattle registration. The app will enable daily monitoring of cattle in all shelters and is expected to be launched soon.
