Folk singer Diwan Kanwal dies at 65; Guv, CM condole

The noted folk singer, Diwan Kanwal passed away on Wednesday morning at his residence in Khatyadi, Almora. He was 65. He, who had been ill for some time, had been admitted at a private hospital in Haldwani. After treatment, he returned home and was recovering. His demise has plunged Kumaon’s folk music community into grief.
Among those who condoled his death included the Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Rtd) and chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
Diwan Kanwal’s popular songs include “Dwi Dina Ka Dyar Sheruwa Yo Duni Mein,” which continues to be cherished by folk music lovers.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters. His wife had passed away earlier. After retirement, Kanwal devoted his life entirely to folk music and songwriting.
His last rites would be performed at Betaleshwar Ghat in Almora, said members of the bereaved family.
