Funds go down the drain: Ganga remains dirty, sewage flowing untreated

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Haridwar
Despite Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan spending funds to the tune of crores every month on maintaining Ganga clean, things on the ground remains the same. People say despairingly that the huge funds are going down the drain with dirty water continuing to flow straight into the river from the sewage pumping station in Kasban, Jwalapur.
Even on Tuesday, contaminated sewage was seen flowing freely into Ganga. Locals said that all their complaints seemed to have gone unheeded. “When a sewage pumping station exists, why is the wastewater being discharged directly the Ganga instead of being treated?” asked a local angrily.
Echoing him, another local said that this not only impacts the purity of Mother Ganga but also poses a serious threat to public health and the environment.
Although Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan officials repeatedly claim that they have improved systems and stopped the sewage, the images that surfaced on Tuesday exposed the hollowness of these claims.
Now the question is: when will the responsible department wake up and when will this contaminated water be stopped from getting discharged in the water of the river revered as the Mother by people across India? The people are demanding immediate action and a permanent solution.
The executive engineer of the Ganga division of Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan, Harish Bansal inspected the site upon being informed of the matter. He admitted following inspection that sewage did flow into Ganga for a short time. “But it was quickly stopped,” he claimed.
