Dehradun police have arrested a chain snatching accused who had allegedly snatched a gold chain from an elderly woman near Shivam Dairy under Nehru Colony police station on February 2. The victim, Malmati Rana had lodged a complaint at Nehru Colony police station the same day, stating that an unknown motorcycle rider had snatched her chain and fled.
Following the filing of the case, the police team, tasked with probing the crime, had checked CCTV footage from nearby areas and activated the informer network. Finally, the police arrested the accused from near Mothrowala bridge.
The arrested accused has been identified as Shadab Ali, a 25-year-old resident of Niyamwala, Doiwala. The police recovered the stolen chain and impounded the motorcycle used in the crime from his possession.
During questioning, the accused is said to have admitted that he is a drug addict and so committed the crime to meet his addiction needs. He had, however, been arrested before he could sell the stolen chain.
Police officials, privy to the details, said that with a criminal history, the accused had earlier gone to Jail in a drug trafficking case. They further said that the department has intensified vigil to stop the chain snatching spree in the city.
