Hyatt Centric, Angithi face Rs 4.5 lakh penalty over food safety lapses

A total penalty of Rs 4.5 lakh on hotel Hyatt Centric and two outlets of Angithi restaurant in Dehradun for violating food safety regulations. The action has drawn attention as both establishments are among the popular dining destinations in the city. Angithi restaurant, in particular, regularly witnesses long queues of customers during the evening hours. 

Dehradun additional district magistrate KK Mishra informed that an inspection was carried out at Hyatt Centric on Rajpur Road in August 2024. During the inspection, food safety officers found expired food items stored in the kitchen and store area for use in food preparation. Officials said keeping expired food items is a violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. After legal proceedings, a court imposed a penalty of Rs 1.5 lakh on the hotel on May 27, 2026.

In another case, Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) officials inspected Angithi restaurant in Nehru Colony. During the inspection, the restaurant failed to produce its food licence and registration documents. Medical fitness certificates of employees were also not available. Officials found the kitchen floor and walls dirty, while food handlers could not provide food safety training certificates. In online complaints, cigarette parts were also reportedly found in food items. Despite receiving a notice to correct the deficiencies, the restaurant failed to submit a compliance report. A penalty of Rs 1.5 lakh was imposed on the restaurant owner on May 7. 

A separate inspection at another Angithi restaurant outlet in Indiranagar found violations related to the display and separation of vegetarian and non vegetarian food products. Officials said that directions issued earlier by food safety authorities were not followed. Following legal proceedings, a penalty of Rs 1.5 lakh was imposed on May 7.
