A criminal from Rajasthan was injured and arrested along with his accomplice after a police encounter after they rammed a police barricade in the Nayagaon area of Dehradun during a checking late on Wednesday night, officials said. On Thursday, Dehradun superintendent of police (City) Pramod Kumar said that the accused are from Rajasthan and have criminal records.
The injured accused has been identified as 30-year-old Rinku Meena from Dausa district of Rajasthan, while the second accused has been identified as Vinod Kumar Meena from Rajasthan. Both arrested men have criminal records, including cases of murder, attempted murder and kidnapping, police said.
Kumar said that the accused revealed that four more associates had accompanied them and police are searching for them. “They had come with a plan to carry out a major criminal activity on the outskirts of Dehradun. We have identified all four accused and will arrest them soon,” he said.
According to police, a checking operation was underway at the Nayagaon barrier when police noticed a suspicious car and signaled the vehicle to stop. The occupants allegedly tried to run over the police team and broke through the barricade before speeding away. The police were chasing the vehicle when the accused allegedly opened fire on the police team. One bullet hit the windshield of a private vehicle being used by the police. The suspects later abandoned their car near Ramgarh and fled into a nearby forest while continuing to fire at police personnel. Police returned fire in self-defense and one of the accused was hit in the leg. A country-made pistol, live cartridges and spent cartridge cases were recovered from him.
The injured accused was first taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to Government Doon Medical College hospital for treatment. The police have registered a case against the accused and launched a search for the remaining suspects who managed to escape.
