Kumaun University’s vice chancellor, Prof Diwan Singh Rawat has been presented with the Fellow of the National Academy (FNA) award by the National Academy of Sciences, India. This award is considered one of the highest achievements in the field of science and research in the country, said KU sources.
Notably, Prof Rawat has received this honour on the basis of his outstanding contribution in medicinal chemistry (especially research work on Parkinson’s disease). His major project is currently in the human trial phase which has raised new hopes for patients suffering from serious neurological diseases.
Importantly, Prof D S Bhakuni, who was Prof Rawat’s research director, had received this honour in 1979. Prof Rawat happened to be Prof Bhakuni’s last PhD student. Besides, Prof K S Valdiya of KU had received this honour in the field of Geology in 1980 and Prof S P Singh in the field of Environmental Science in 2003.
KU sources further said that this honour is particularly significant for Prof Rawat for he has received this at a time when he is serving as the VC of his alma mater.
