MCD clears Holi garbage, sanitation teams deployed across city

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) officials said on Thursday that sanitation teams have been deployed across the provisional State capital after garbage piles accumulated in several areas following Holi celebrations. Waste was seen on roadsides, lanes and market areas in some localities a day after the festival on Thursday. Residents said that door-to-door waste collection was delayed in a few places during the holiday period, which led to temporary garbage accumulation in residential colonies and commercial areas.

Empty colour packets, plastic waste, food leftovers and other refuse were visible along roadsides, particularly in busy neighbourhoods and markets where routine waste collection did not take place during the festival.

Deputy municipal commissioner Tanvir Marwah said that the disruption occurred because sanitation operations were affected during Holi. The delay was temporary and that teams were mobilised soon after the festival to restore normal waste collection services across the city, he added.

A resident of Rispana Nagar stated that the garbage collection staff usually visit the locality daily but did not arrive on Holi or the following morning, which led to waste piling up in the area.

Marwah added that the sanitation workers have now resumed operations and are clearing accumulated waste in different wards. He said that the situation is expected to normalise by late evening as collection vehicles and sanitation teams continue their rounds.

The corporation said that it continues to run cleanliness campaigns under the Swachh Survekshan and stressed that maintaining sanitation during large festivals remains a logistical challenge due to the sharp increase in waste generation. Officials added that efforts are being made to further streamline festival waste management to ensure timely collection and disposal across Dehradun.
