Wildlife monitoring: Training on GIS held at Niti Valley

A one-day training programme on GIS and modern tools and techniques for wildlife monitoring was successfully organised on Saturday at the Niti Valley Biosphere Reserve – Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. The objective of this training was to familiarise forest department officials, staff and participants working in the field with innovative methods of wildlife monitoring and scientific data collection using geographic information systems, remote sensing, camera traps, GPS, mobile-based applications and other modern technologies.
During the programme, experts elaborated on the usefulness of GIS in wildlife habitat mapping, species distribution analysis, human-wildlife conflict monitoring and conservation and management plans. Practical demonstrations of modern tools used at the field level provided significant technical insights to participants, the organisers said.
Technical sessions were conducted by experts from Himalayan Consultancy, Ravindra Posti, Vineet Kumar Dubey and Anuj Joshi, who shared valuable insights on the practical application of modern technologies through their experiences.
