The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) claimed to have intensified its drain and river cleaning drive under the “100 Days, One Mission – Reviving Our Rivers” campaign across the city. The civic body officers said that the initiative is meant to tackle growing concerns over waterlogging, pollution and poor sanitation in several parts of the city during the monsoon season.
Cleaning operations are being carried out at key locations, including Sattowali Ghat (Kaolin Road), Urja Bhawan, Rishi Nagar near Rispana Shamshan Ghat, Machli Bazar–Kalika Mandir, Ladpur Tapovan Nala, Banjarawala and Mannuganj Nala. These areas have been identified as critical points due to heavy waste accumulation and drainage issues.
The officials further said that the drive, which had begun earlier this month, has been progressing satisfactorily. At the Urja Bhawan stretch, a large quantity of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been cleared, with figures rising from over 55,000 units on March 8 to more than 1.5 lakh units by mid-March. Cleaning work at this site has now been completed, they said.
Meanwhile, work at other major locations, including Rishi Nagar (Rispana Shamshan Ghat), Sattowali Ghat and Machli Bazar, is still underway. “The recent inclusion of additional areas such as Ladpur Tapovan Nala and Banjarawala indicates that the scope of the campaign is being expanded to cover more affected areas,” an MCD officer said, adding that the primary objective of the drive is to strengthen the drainage network, prevent waterlogging during rains and reduce pollution in local water bodies, particularly Rispana river, which has been under environmental stress.
