PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Friday carried out a joint enforcement drive across the capital, issuing 127 challans against littering, unauthorised dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste and encroachments on public land. The drive was conducted under the direction of the municipal commissioner Namami Bansal and led by additional municipal commissioner Praveen Kumar. Teams from the Health, Construction and Land sections participated in the action.

According to the officials, the Health section issued 82 challans for littering in public places and collected Rs 21,500 in fines. In cases of illegal dumping of C&D waste, six challans were issued and Rs 7,000 was collected as penalty. The enforcement team also cleared debris from roads and public spaces and instructed violators to dispose of construction waste only at designated dumping sites as per municipal norms.

The Land section separately acted against encroachments on public property. It issued 39 challans and imposed Rs 18,700 in fines during the drive.

The MCD officials said that the action was part of an ongoing effort to strengthen solid waste management enforcement and protect public land from illegal occupation. They added that similar joint drives will continue regularly within municipal limits.

It is pertinent to mention here that there has been increasing criticism from the public and experts about the deteriorating state of Dehradun. The district administration and MCD have intensified their efforts to correct the anomalies in the recent past.
