Government B D Pandey District Hospital hosted an awareness camp to mark the Safe Motherhood Day at which pregnant women were made aware of the maternal mortality and infant mortality rates. Addressing the programme, a senior gynaecologist of the hospital Dr Draupadi Gabrial explained the maternity mortality rate. She said that it is the rate of death of women during pregnancy or within 42 days after the end of pregnancy which occurs due to pregnancy- related reasons. The mortality rate of mother and child during pregnancy or delivery or after the birth of the child is an important indicator for health and family welfare, she said. Explaining the infant mortality rate, she said that it is the mortality rate of children under one year of age. “Its main reasons are lack of access to health services nutrition and education caused by low socio-economic status,” she said while urging regular medical check-ups during pregnancy and post-pregnancy.
