PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

In view of public interest and to ensure the smooth functioning of public transport, district magistrate Savin Bansal has ordered the relocation of the weekly Sunday market that was held at Rangers Ground near Lansdowne Chowk. The market will be shifted on the property of Metro Rail Limited near ISBT, Dehradun. This decision comes in response to the traffic congestion caused by the Sunday market, which has been obstructing the flow of traffic in the city. Pertinently The Pioneer had raised the issue of Sunday Market and inconvenience caused to the people on many occasions.

Bansal said that every Sunday, a large number of people and vehicles gather at the market, resulting in poorly managed parking and significant traffic Jams at Lansdowne Chowk, Darshanlal Chowk, Buddha Chowk and adjacent areas, including the crossroads intersection. This disruption creates serious issues for the public, especially for elderly individuals, children and those relying on emergency services, including patients travelling to and from Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital.

Major roads, intersections and various offices, such as Doon Hospital, are located near Rangers Ground, he said. The traffic disruptions caused by the Sunday market have a detrimental impact on essential services, which prompted the district administration to make the decision to relocate the market, DM said.

“The Sunday Weekly Market Welfare Committee requested the cancellation of the market at Rangers Ground and its relocation to a more suitable area in the city,” he stated.

Bansal said that after considering this request in a meeting, the he took action in the public interest by prohibiting the operation of the Sunday market at Rangers Ground and directing its relocation to the land of Uttarakhand Metro Rail Urban Infrastructure and Building Construction Corporation Limited near ISBT, Dehradun, DM said.

Bansal said that the Sunday market will now be conducted at this new location, which is currently vacant and under the possession and control of MDDA and has been leased for the Neo (Metro) Project in Dehradun, in accordance with a State government order. This arrangement will remain in effect until any actual work related to the Metro Project begins on the site, he said.
