A team from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) visited Haridwar on Sunday to inspect the damage caused by floods and disasters during the monsoon this year. The experts in the team stressed on long-term solutions to prevent damage from floods and landslides in the district.
Headed by Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, chief scientist Ajay Chaurasia, the team visited the disaster affected areas and also held a meeting. Conducting the meeting, Haridwar-Roorkee Development Authority secretary Manish Kumar Singh provided detailed information about the specifics of the districts along with the damage suffered during this monsoon.
Chaurasia directed the officials to prepare long-term plans to prevent damage from floods and landslides and send these to the Government of India. The Irrigation department was directed to prepare proposals for construction of embankments and a concrete plan to prevent land erosion. Stress was also laid on preparing proposals related to washed out roads, sewer lines, drainage and construction of sewage treatment plants. Chaurasia also directed the officials concerned to prepare a plan-B for maintaining the communications network along with a special work plan to ensure that roads are not blocked during a disaster scenario.
The NDMA team also visited the railway track near Bhimgauda bridge and the Mansa Devi area. It directed that permanent solutions should be found for debris repeatedly falling on the railway track and the area vulnerable to landslide in the Mansa Devi area. Seeking details about damage to various schemes, cattle and buildings, the team also discussed preparation of the work plans for this. Officials of the district administration and various departments concerned were also present during the inspection and the meeting.
