PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun
With the Transport department preparing for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra, the hi-tech check posts are set to become fully operational from April 16. These check posts have been set up at key locations, including Asharodi, Kata Patthar, Herbertpur, Rishikesh, Tapovan, Bhadrakali and Sonprayag to manage the movement of vehicles and ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Nodal officer for Char Dham Yatra and regional transport office (Administration) Dehradun Division Sandeep Saini said that they had installed modern Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at border areas. These cameras will record vehicle number plates and help in strict monitoring. They further said that more than 1,500 green cards have already been issued.
He further added that at the listed check posts, vehicles will be checked properly. Officials will verify green cards, trip cards and other important documents. Special enforcement teams will also be present to check vehicle fitness and safety standards. This step is being taken to avoid accidents and ensure that pilgrims face no problems during the journey.
Saini said that Rishikesh has been made the main centre for monitoring the Yatra. A central control room is being set up there, where transport officials will be available round the clock. Pilgrims can call the toll-free number 0135-2743432 to get help or report any issues during the journey.
To manage traffic and reduce jams in Rishikesh in particular, special check posts have been set up at Herbertpur and Rishikesh. Buses will be checked at these points before moving forward, so that congestion can be avoided in busy areas like Tapovan and Bhadrakali. Rest points are also being developed at Asharodi and Narsan borders. These rest points will provide facilities like beds and toilets for drivers coming from long distances, he said.
