After an investigation at the chief medical officer level, the case concerning a woman who died due to a surgical bandage being left inside her abdomen has been referred to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for further detailed examination. It is important to mention that the case concerns 26-year-old Jyoti Prajwal, a resident of Lakkhibagh, who had a cesarean section at the Mother Care Centre (Singh Eye Hospital) located in Araghar, Dalanwala.
Prajwal gave birth to her son on January 29 and was discharged from the hospital four days later. However, about ten days after the delivery, she began experiencing intense abdominal pain. Despite undergoing several tests, doctors could not determine the cause of her suffering. As her condition worsened, her family returned her to the same hospital, where she was subsequently referred to Graphic Era Hospital.
It was discovered that a surgical bandage had been left inside her abdomen, which led to a serious infection resulting in her death late on Sunday. In response to this unfortunate incident, Prajwal’s family organised a protest by placing her body outside the hospital, accusing the hospital administration of negligence and potentially even homicide. In reaction to the situation, the Dehradun CMO Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma acknowledged the issue and formed a committee to conduct an investigation.
He stated that the investigation was initiated recently. The committee has since carried out the inquiry, but did not find substantial evidence indicating that the hospital was negligent in this case. Consequently, the previously sealed hospital has been reopened.
Further, considering the gravity of this issue, the case has been referred to the NMC. Their ethics committee will conduct a thorough investigation, after which appropriate action will be taken, he added.
