Police are identifying individuals who are spreading misinformation about the Uttarkashi flash flood incident on social media. The Uttarkashi superintendent of police Sarita Dobhal said that several posts and pictures have been circulating in social media spreading false information about the incident. She stated that recently a post went viral claiming the death of 700 people in the Harsil-Dharali disaster which is false and misleading. The SP urged the public not to share or forward unverified information, stating that such posts can create unnecessary panic and confusion during ongoing rescue and relief operations. She has advised everyone to rely only on updates issued through official government sources. Dobhal said that the police are monitoring social media platforms and identifying those responsible for circulating unverified or false content related to the disaster. Legal action will be taken against those found spreading rumours or creating unrest. The SP said that misinformation during disasters not only misguides the public but can also disrupt rescue operations, divert resources and increase fear among victims’ families. She said that timely updates will be provided as operations progress and appealed to citizens to act responsibly. Rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas are continuing on a priority basis, with regular communication from the authorities to ensure public awareness, she added.
