The Uttarakhand Mahila Congress on Tuesday protested during the special Assembly session here demanding immediate implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women. Women and other party workers led by Mahila Congress State president Jyoti Rautela marched towards the Vidhan Sabha while raising slogans against the government. Police stopped the protesters at tbe barricade near the Assembly building. This resulted in a heated argument between protesters and the police. Some women workers also tried to cross the barricade, leading to a brief scuffle-like situation. Police detained several women workers and took them to Police Lines.

Senior Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat also reached the protest site and supported the agitation. He said, “Denying women their constitutional right is against democratic values. The government should immediately implement women’s reservation”.

Rautela said that the parliament had passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in 2023, but the 33 per cent reservation has still not been implemented. She alleged that the government is delaying women’s rights in the name of census and delimitation.

She said women are now aware of their rights and the protest will continue until reservation is implemented. The Mahila Congress warned that if women’s reservation is not implemented soon, the movement will be intensified in the coming days.
