Two separate incidents of snatching and theft were reported in Rishikesh and Dehradun. In one case, an unknown man snatched the mangalsutra of an elderly woman. In the other incident, an elderly woman lost her gold chain and cash while travelling in a rickshaw.
In the first incident, an elderly woman lost her gold chain and cash while travelling in a rickshaw in Rishikesh. The incident took place on January 22, around 1 pm, near Triveni Ghat Chauraha. The victim, Chandrakala Devi, was travelling with her daughter Deep Shikha Shukla after purchasing puja items from a nearby shop.
According to the complaint, four other women were also sitting in the same rickshaw. Two of them introduced themselves as Khushboo and Damini. During the journey, these women allegedly stole the gold chain from Chandrakala Devi’s neck and also took some cash from her purse. The elderly woman realised the theft only after the women got down from the rickshaw. Chandrakala Devi and her daughter tried to search for the suspects in nearby areas, but they could not be found. The matter was later reported to Kotwali Rishikesh police station. Police have registered a case and are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to trace the accused.
In another incident, a case of chain snatching was reported in the Raipur area of Dehradun on January 25. The incident took place around 10:30 am near Shiv Mandir Dhang. An unknown man snatched the mangalsutra of an elderly woman, Kunti Devi, a resident of Nathuwawala Dhang, and fled from the spot. As per the complaint filed by her son, Ganesh Dutt Bahuguna, the accused was following the woman on a motorcycle without a number plate. Near the temple, he parked the vehicle, followed her on foot, and suddenly snatched the mangalsutra before escaping uphill.
In both cases, the victims raised alarms, but the accused managed to escape. Police have started investigations in both matters.
