To alleviate traffic congestion the district administration is set to introduce 40 additional golf carts in Mussoorie. The golf carts will be provided with the financial support of Rs 3.36 crore by the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) Foundation Limited.
On the request of district magistrate Savin Bansal, the managing director of REC Foundation Limited and an additional secretary from the Government of India will visit Dehradun this month to sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the district administration. Bansal stated that the primary objective of this initiative is to reduce the escalating traffic pressure in Mussoorie and to offer safe, environmentally friendly transportation options to both tourists and local residents. This initiative will also provide better income opportunities for traditional rickshaw pullers. The operation of the additional golf carts is expected to significantly diminish traffic congestion on Mall Road and Camelback Road. Pollution-free transportation will be promoted, leading to an improvement in the economic conditions of local rickshaw pullers. Senior citizens, people with disabilities and tourists will benefit from comfortable transport, enhancing the overall tourism experience, he said.
DM instructed all relevant departments to complete the necessary arrangements for golf cart operations, including route determination, parking spaces, charging systems and others in a timely manner. The golf carts were first introduced in Mussoorie in December 2024 to ease traffic congestion. Local rickshaw pullers have been trained to operate the golf carts. In the first phase, four golf carts were introduced and currently 14 of them are operational.
