PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

The Education department of Uttarakhand has taken a decision to include the teachings of Bhagvad Geeta and Ramayana in the curriculum of the schools. On the orders of the Education director, the recitation of shlokas of Geeta has started during the morning assembly in the schools of the State.

In a letter directed to all chief education officers, the director Secondary Education Mukul Sati said as per the National Education Policy-2020, all the students should be informed about the Indian traditional knowledge in various subjects as well as in the interdisciplinary field.  He said that the process of developing syllabus and text books for various classes is underway and the State curriculum framework  (SCF) has been prepared for this endeavour.

Sati said that the textbooks on Indian traditional knowledge will be implemented from the next academic session.

“The NEP-2020 lays great emphasis on the development of character and moral qualities of students and is making innovative efforts to keep students connected to their ancient knowledge tradition. India, which once had the status of Vishwaguru in the field of knowledge, was deprived of this title due to foreign invaders and contemporary circumstances, but contemporary India is rapidly establishing its place in the modern world in the field of knowledge and skills. The study of our vibrant national heritage and the environment in which we live, which affects our entire lifestyle, will guide the future life of the students,’’ the order reads.

Sati said that initially one appropriate shloka from Bhagwat Geeta should be recited to the students in the morning assembly meetings. Similarly, every week a value based shloka should be declared as ‘Shloka of the Week’ and written on the notice board.

He added that it should be ensured at every level that the teachings of Bhagwat Gita and scientific approach should be used for character development of students, development of balanced approach towards life, personality development, development of scientific thinking and increase in self-confidence and to make them good citizens.
