Tigers turn aggressive during mating season between Nov & Feb: Corbett on high alert

CHANCHAL GOLA/ Ramnagar
Keeping in view the tiger mating (breeding) season, the Corbett Tiger Reserve administration has gone into full alert mode. The period between November and February is considered highly sensitive, as tigers tend to become more aggressive during this time. Every year, incidents of human–wildlife conflict surge up significantly during this season. According to the official figures, tigers have claimed the lives of more than a dozen people over the past two years while several others have been injured.
In view of the growing threat, the Corbett administration has started holding meetings in villages located on the fringes of the forest. Villagers are being strictly advised not to enter the forest unnecessarily. Forest department staff are making public announcements to spread awareness and caution people to remain alert.
The Corbett National Park warden Binder Pal said that the CTR is organising awareness camps in village schools, where children are being educated about forests, tiger behaviour and safety measures. All forest outposts have been put on high alert to deal with any emergency situation. Patrolling has been intensified, too.
A wildlife enthusiast, Sanjay Chhimwal said that tigers are solitary animals by nature. During the breeding season, they do not tolerate the presence of another tiger in their territory, which makes them more aggressive. “At the same time, tigresses become extremely aggressive while protecting their cubs,” he added.
