Tripura student dies fortnight after being stabbed by drunk youth

A 24-year-old student from Tripura died on Friday after being stabbed during an attack in Dehradun’s Selaqui area on December 6. The deceased was identified as Angel Chakma, from Unakoti district of Tripura. The incident took place when Angel and his younger brother Michael had gone out to buy groceries, police said.

Five accused have been arrested in the case, while one is still absconding. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that police teams are actively tracking the absconding accused. He added that information has been received that the accused is in Nepal and efforts are on to arrest him as soon as possible.

According to the police, six youths passed racial slurs at the brothers. Michael tried to protect his brother but one of the attackers stabbed him on the head and back. Angel suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors said his spinal cord was badly damaged.

Michael later filed a complaint at the police station. Police identified the accused as Avinash Negi, Suraj Khwas, Sumit Kumar, Shaurya, Ayush Badoni and Yagya Awasthi all residents of selaqui. After Angel died during treatment, the police added murder and criminal conspiracy charges to the case.
