Uttarakhand to start Nurse Practitioner and Midwifery programme

The State government has given its approval to the proposal of the Health department for starting the Nurse Practitioner and Midwifery programme. A meeting of the state level midwifery taskforce was convened at the State secretariat on Monday. The meeting was chaired by the Health secretary R Rajesh Kumar and the approval for the programme was given in the meeting.
Kumar said that the commencement of the Nurse Practitioner Midwifery programme is a historic achievement for the State. He claimed that the programme will help in improving the quality of the maternal health and child services in the State and result in reduction in maternal mortality rate (MMR). It is pertinent to mention here that the MMR in Uttarakhand is 104 per one lakh live births while at national level it is 88 per lakh.
Kumar said that the first batch of the NPM programme will have 30 trainees. The 18 month training programme will be organised by the State Midwifery Training Institute Dehradun. He said that after completion of the training the trained midwives have a background of GNM/ B. Sc Nursing will be appointed in the elected government medical institutes where they will provide quality and evidence based maternity services which will help in safe delivery. The initiative is in accordance to the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals of the government of India.
The mission director of National Health Mission Manuj Goyal, NHM director Dr Shikha Jangpangi, Medical Health director Dr CP Tripathi and others attended the meeting.
