Maneater on the loose: Permission granted for its capture

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Ramnagar

A day after the death of an elderly  woman in tiger attack in the Dhela area, the chief conservator of forests (Wildlife), Ranjan Kumar Mishra has  given permission to Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) administration to capture the man-eater. Informing this on Saturday, the CTR director, Saket Badola said that they have started the operation to capture the tiger soon after receiving the permission.

“Camera traps are being installed in potential movement areas while the big cat’s movement is being continuously monitored with the help of drones,” he added. “If required, it will be tranquilised,” he further said.  The villagers have meanwhile been urged not to enter the reserved forest area for their own safety with the man-eater being on the loose.

Notably, the angry villagers had blocked the Dhela–Ramnagar road and staged a demonstration, demanding the tiger be captured on Friday soon after the woman’s body was found.

On Saturday, too, anger among them was palpable. They warned that if the Corbett administration fails to capture the tiger soon, they would go for a major agitation against the Forest department.   A Forest department officer admitted that tension kept mounting between the villagers and the department in the aftermath of the elderly woman’s death in tiger attack.
