A woman who had gone into the jungle was killed by a tiger in the Fatehpur area of Kathgodam Lamachaud in Ramnagar division on Thursday morning. According to sources, Peepal Pokhra resident Ganga Devi (65) and three other women had gone about three kilometres inside the jungle to collect fodder at about 11 AM on Thursday. A tiger attacked the victim and dragged her about a kilometre further into the jungle while the three other women managed to run away from the scene.

The woman’s mutilated body was found after a search and sent for post mortem examination. Reaching the site, Ramnagar divisional forest officer Dhruv Singh Martolia directed staff to install camera traps, set up cages and monitor the movements of the big cat.

Meanwhile, the local villagers said that seven persons have been killed in attacks by tigers and leopards in this area in the past. However, the Forest department has not declared the area sensitive and has not increased patrolling or installed cages so far, they alleged.
