5 killed, 6 injured in two separate road accidents on mountain roads

Five persons died and six were injured in two separate road accidents in Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts within 24 hours since late Friday night.

In Chamoli district, a car fell into a 500 metre deep gorge in the jungle area of Lwani at 5:50 AM killing three persons on the spot and injuring three seriously.

Resident of Baank, Lohajang, Balbir Singh’s family member Bhajan Singh had died during treatment in Dehradun. The body was being transported in a private ambulance to the village for the last rites while Singh and his family members were travelling along in his car. According to preliminary investigation, the driver is suspected to have dozed off while driving, leading to the accident. Balbir Singh (52), his wife Shanti Devi (48) and their son Ashu Bisht (18) died on the spot. The three persons injured in the mishap were admitted to a hospital for treatment.

In Uttarkashi district, an aged couple from Maharashtra were killed and three persons were injured on the Gangotri national highway when the car they were returning in from Gangotri to Uttarkashi fell into an 80 metre deep gorge late on Friday. According to the district emergency operation centre, the driver of a vehicle returning from Gangotri lost control near Helkugad at about 8:10 PM on Friday, causing the vehicle to fall down the mountainside. Nagpur, Maharashtra residents Damodar Hariram Ramtekkar (770 and his wife Lakshmi Damodar Ramtekkar (67) died on the spot. The aged couple was undertaking the Char Dham Yatra and returning after offering prayers at Gangotri Dham. Bhubaneshwar, Odisha residents Vimal Kumar Pradhan (61), his wife Upasana Pradhan (54) and the driver, Punjab resident Yashveer (35) were injured in the accident. The injured were taken by ambulance to the district hospital for treatment.
