The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will develop Niranjanpur’s pond as a multifaceted tourism centre. The corporation has sent a detailed project report of the same to the State administration in order to commence the construction work soon. The municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal said that the whole work will be done in a total area of 3.129 hectares and the corporation has a certain vision to develop it as a tourism centre. He said that chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had also announced that this pond would be developed as a tourism centre considering its use and need in the area. He said that the corporation is optimistic that the administration will approve their plan.
According to MCD officials, there are very few public open spaces available for common citizens where they can go for picnics, cycling, or where children can enjoy themselves. Considering the situation, they added that this pond will be developed where locals can enjoy all these things. They said that their plan currently includes ensuring the conservation of rainwater in the pond via modern methods while ensuring its upgradation.
The corporation’s main focus will be to increase the source of water and the catchment area of the pond. The officials said that their plan includes making a walking path around the pond for sightseeing. They will also form a cycling track around it so that cyclists, especially children can enjoy the sight while staying safe there.
A public plaza will also be developed there. Other facilities like boating and children’s park among others will also be made available there to promote local tourism as well, said the officials. Besides this, a food corner will also be developed there for easy availability of refreshments and food for the visitors. A small market for traditional food and other products of the State will also be set up by self-help groups. The officials said that the corporation also plans to increase social interaction and cultural activities among the people along with tourism. This plan will also provide employment opportunities to locals besides becoming a good source of income for the corporation, added officials.
