The demand for blue lens spectacles has witnessed a significant surge due to the increasing time people spend watching the screens of mobile phones and computers for study, work and entertainment. Experts said that the sale of blue filter or blue cut lenses has risen by an average of 50 per cent as compared to past years. These lenses effectively filter out blue light emitted by electronic device screens and provide a certain level of protection to the eyes, the experts said
Those working in optical stores in Dehradun said the sales of the blue filter lenses had shot up with the advent of work-from-home arrangements and online classes. Commenting on the demand for such lenses, optician HR Bhatt said, “The demand for blue filter or blue cut lenses has experienced an average increase of 50 per cent. This rise in demand is particularly noticeable among young adults who use electronic gadgets excessively. However, children are currently unaware of the benefits of blue cut lenses.”
Bhatt further said blue cut lenses are designed to reduce the harmful radiation emitted by screens of mobile phones and laptops. These lenses effectively prevent dryness and itchiness in the eyes. Additionally, it would be advantageous for everyone to regularly take breaks from electronic devices, in conjunction with the use of blue filter lenses. It is strongly advised that customers thoroughly research and choose a reputable brand when purchasing blue filter lenses, as low-quality lenses can have detrimental effects on the eyes, he added.
Eye specialist Dr Amit Singh said that individuals in the age group of 10 to 30 years are excessively reliant on electronic gadgets, which poses a significant risk to their eye health. Currently, there is a high demand for blue filter lenses due to their ability to protect against the detrimental light emitted by phones and laptops. Nonetheless, Dr Singh emphasised that blue filter lenses can only mitigate harmful radiation by an average of 50 per cent. “As an eye specialist, I advise everyone to wear blue filter lenses to protect their eyes partially from the harmful radiation. But, it would be best for everyone to limit their screen time for healthy eyes,” Singh said.
