Head constable Swadesh Kumar Rai of the cybercrime police station in Dehradun single-handedly gathered crucial intelligence on cybercriminals across India. Over a span of 78 days, he covered over 72 cities across 16 states, meticulously verifying the identities of 61 suspected cybercriminals and collecting invaluable confidential information regarding their operations, the deputy superintendent of police of cyber crime police station, STF, Ankush Mishra claimed.
He said that following orders from senior officials and complying with court directives, Rai set out from Dehradun on August 20, 2024, embarking on a journey across country’s challenging terrains, from border areas like West Bengal’s Sundarbans, which is close to the Bangladesh border, to Gujarat’s Dwarka and from the northern limits of Punjab near the Pakistan border to the southern coastal reaches of Tamil Nadu. His investigation involved extensive fieldwork, using every mode of transport available from buses, trains, steamboats, motorcycles and even on foot without a break or observing any holidays during this period.
Mishra said that in his thorough verification efforts, Rai served 41A CrPC notices to 15 of these suspects under the new law, section 35(3) of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). He further collaborated with local police forces, demonstrating sharp acumen and vigilance by engaging directly with locals and suspects to uncover detailed information on cybercriminal syndicates. The DSP said that confidential information collected through Rai is expected to play a critical role in STF’s plans to expose and dismantle significant cybercriminal networks.
