An assassination attempt was made on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar at around 9 am when he was serving as a ‘swevadar’ at the temple’s entrance as part of a religious punishment. The assailant was grabbed by the plainclothes policeman and the attempt was aborted. He was identified as Narain Singh Chaura, a former terrorist who was once connected with the Babbar Khalsa International. He fired at the veteran leader from a close range.
Notably, Badal is a ‘Z Plus’ protectee. He was unhurt, police said.
